Literary Translation At War
Centré sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale, un moment pivot du XXe siècle, le projet de recherches TranslAtWar ambitionne d’interroger l’apport de la traduction à la compréhension de l’Histoire européenne en train de se faire, et, réciproquement, l’apport de l’Histoire à l’analyse des multiples formes de la traduction. Il s’agira de questionner les modalités de circulation des idéologies, des idées et de la culture par le biais de la traduction littéraire, et de s’intéresser de près au rôle des agents de ces circulations, traducteurs et traductrices, en temps de guerre. On enquêtera également sur l’impact que la pratique de la traduction dans des circonstances historiques exceptionnelles a pu avoir sur le développement intellectuel et culturel d’un pays, ce qu’elle est susceptible de lui apporter en fonction de sa situation (centrale ou périphérique) dans le monde des lettres européen.
Sous la direction de Christine Lombez (Nantes Université), et s'appuyant sur un réseau d’expert internationaux issu de huit pays d’Europe, ce projet innovant se donne pour but d’écrire une nouvelle page de l’histoire européenne au prisme de la traduction en temps de guerre.
Focussing on World War 2, a pivotal moment in 20th century European history, the TranslAtWar research project aims to investigate how literary translation can contribute to the understanding of History in the making and reciprocally. It is about questioning the circulation of ideologies, ideas and culture through translation, and equally taking a close interest in the role of the agents of these circulations, both male and female translators, during wartime. We will also investigate the impact that the practice of translation in such exceptional historical circumstances had on the intellectual and cultural development of several countries, and what it is likely to have contributed to their position (central or peripheral) in the world of European literature.
Under the direction of Christine Lombez (Nantes Université), and relying on a network of international experts from eight European countries, this innovative project aims to write a new page of European history through the prism of translation in wartime.
The TranslAtWar ERC is a five year European project and received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement n°101052360.

Le programme ERC TranslAtWar organisera son premier colloque international les 13 et 14 novembre prochain au Centre Universitaire de la Norvège à Paris (CUNP / FMPSH). Cette rencontre, intitulée « Traduction littéraire, canons et idéologies – Anthologies et formes anthologiques en Europe durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939-1945) », visera à offrir une analyse approfondie, à la fois qualitative et quantitative, d’un phénomène littéraire majeur durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale en Europe. The ERC TranslAtWar program will organize its first international conference on November 13th and 14th at the Centre Universitaire de la Norvège à Paris (CUNP / FMPSH). This conference, entitled "Literary Translation, Canons, and Ideologies – Anthologies and Anthological Forms in Europe during the Second World War (1939-1945)," will aim to provide a comprehensive analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, of a major literary phenomenon during World War II in Europe. L’équipe TranslAtWar s’est réunie les 24 et 25 octobre derniers dans le Museum de l’ancienne Université d’Athènes pour 2 jours de séminaire passionnants sur les portraits de traducteurs durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Les 4 doctorantes du programme ont notamment présenté le futur compte Instagram de l’ERC TranslAtWar qui sera mis en ligne très prochainement. Le prochain rendez-vous TranslAtWar est par ailleurs déjà annoncé et traitera d’un sujet inédit : les anthologies de textes littéraires en traduction durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Il se déroulera à Paris les 13 et 14 novembre 2025 et sera le premier évènement TranslAtWar ouvert ! Plus d’informations à venir d’ici la fin de l’année …
The TranslAtWar team met on October, 24th and 25th in the museum of Athens’ Old University for a 2-day fascinating seminar about the translators’ portraits during WW2. The 4 PhD students of the program also introduced the future Instagram account of the ERC TranslAtWar which will be online very soon. The next TranslAtWar meeting has already been announced and will deal with an original subject: the anthologies of literary texts in translation during WW2. It will take place in Paris on November, 13th and 14th 2025 and will be the first TranslAtWar event open to external participations! More information to come by the end of the year...
