Le programme ERC TranslAtWar lance un appel à communication à destination des doctorants et post-doctorants pour son colloque Jeunes Chercheurs consacré au rôle de la traduction et de la circulation des textes dans les dynamiques littéraires européennes durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Les propositions de communication (250 à 400 mots), rédigées en français ou en anglais et accompagnées d'une courte notice bio-bibliographique, sont à envoyer avant le 30 septembre 2026 à l'adresse suivante : translatwar.phd@gmail.com.

Translating Between Centre and Periphery: Literary Europe at War (1939–1945)

The ERC TranslAtWar programme invites PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to submit proposals for its Early Career Researchers Conference, dedicated to the role of translation and textual circulation in shaping literary relations across Europe during the Second World War.
Proposals (250–400 words) may be submitted in French or English until 30 September 2026 at translatwar.phd@gmail.com.

TranslAtWar à la Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs (Nantes Université) : retour sur l’intervention de Christine Lombez et Pauline Giocanti
À l’occasion de la Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs, Christine Lombez et Pauline Giocanti ont présenté le programme TranslAtWar lors d’une mini-conférence consacrée à l’usage résistant de la traduction littéraire en temps de guerre.
Leur intervention a mis en lumière auprès d’un large public la manière dont la traduction, loin d’être un simple outil linguistique, constitue un espace stratégique, idéologique et culturel majeur en période de conflit.
L’échange qui a suivi a donné lieu à une discussion particulièrement enrichissante, témoignant de l’intérêt suscité par ces recherches et de leur résonance au-delà du cercle académique.

TranslAtWar at the Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs (Nantes Université): Christine Lombez and Pauline Giocanti’s presentation
During the Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs, Christine Lombez and Pauline Giocanti presented the TranslAtWar program in a short talk devoted to literary translation as a form of resistance in wartime.
Their presentation highlighted to a broad audience how translation, far from being a merely linguistic operation, becomes a strategic, ideological, and cultural space in times of conflict.
The discussion that followed led to a particularly stimulating exchange, reflecting the strong interest generated by these topics beyond academia.

TranslAtwar at the 10th Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs!
The ERC TranslAtwar project will take part in the 10th edition of the Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs, a public event dedicated to sharing research with a wide audience.
On this occasion, Christine Lombez, Scientific Coordinator of the TranslAtwar programme, and Pauline Giocanti, postdoctoral researcher in the project, will give a short talk entitled “Translating in Times of War”, addressing the challenges, practices and stakes of translation in contexts of armed conflict.

L’équipe de recherche TranslAtWar est désormais au complet, avec le recrutement, à la fin de l’année 2025, de Pauline Giocanti et Claudia Zeller, toutes deux postdoctorantes au sein du programme.
Arrivée le 8 septembre 2025, Pauline Giocanti contribue au programme en menant un travail de recherche original sur le rôle des écrivains-traducteurs (hommes et femmes) — poètes, romanciers, etc. — dans la construction des pratiques de traduction littéraire en Europe pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939-1945).
Claudia Zeller, recrutée le 8 décembre 2025, développe quant à elle une recherche centrée sur la collecte bibliographique des traductions littéraires parues aux Pays-Bas durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ainsi que sur leur intégration dans la base de données TranslAtWar, actuellement en cours de constitution.
Toutes deux participeront également, avec l’appui des quatre doctorantes du programme, à l’organisation de la Junior Conference prévue au printemps 2027.

The TranslAtWar research team is now complete, following the recruitment, at the end of 2025, of Pauline Giocanti and Claudia Zeller, both appointed as postdoctoral researchers within the project.
Having joined the team on 8th September 2025, Pauline Giocanti contributes to the project through an original research focusing on the role played by writer-translators (both men and women)—poets, novelists, and others—in shaping literary translation practices in Europe during the Second World War (1939–1945).
Claudia Zeller, recruited on 8th December 2025, is conducting research centered on the bibliographical collection of literary translations published in the Netherlands during the Second World War, as well as on their integration into the TranslAtWar database, which is currently in progress.
Together with the four doctoral researchers involved in the programme, both postdoctoral fellows will also contribute to the organization of a Junior Conference, scheduled for Spring 2027.

Du 12 au 14 novembre 2025, le programme ERC TranslAtWar a organisé à Paris trois journées de travail et d’échanges scientifiques, réunissant les membres de l’équipe ainsi que des collègues invités.
La première journée, le mercredi 12 novembre, a été consacrée à un atelier de base de données réservé à l’équipe TranslAtWar. Cet atelier a permis de faire un point d’avancement sur le programme ERC, de présenter l’état actuel de la base de données des portraits de traducteurs et traductrices, et de discuter collectivement des protocoles éditoriaux, des questions de normalisation, de translittération et des perspectives de développement de l’outil.
Les deux journées suivantes, les 13 et 14 novembre, ont accueilli le colloque international « Traduction littéraire, canons et idéologies : anthologies et formes anthologiques en Europe durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939–1945) ». Les communications des membres de l’équipe TranslAtWar ont été enrichies par la participation de collègues venus notamment des universités de Ljubljana, Madrid et de Sorbonne Université, favorisant un dialogue scientifique particulièrement fécond.
Ces trois journées ont ainsi offert un espace privilégié de réflexion collective autour des pratiques de traduction en contexte de guerre, tout en renforçant les échanges scientifiques au sein et au-delà du programme TranslAtWar.
From 12 to 14 November 2025, the ERC project TranslAtWar held three days of scientific discussions and collaborative work in Paris, bringing together members of the research team as well as invited colleagues.
The first day, Wednesday 12 November, was devoted to a database workshop reserved for the TranslAtWar team. This session provided an overview of the project’s progress, presented the current state of the translators’ biographical database, and fostered collective discussions on editorial protocols, standardisation issues, transliteration practices, and future developments of the tool.
The following two days, on 13 and 14 November, were dedicated to the international conference “Literary Translation, Canons and Ideologies: Anthologies and Anthological Forms in Europe during the Second World War (1939–1945)”. Alongside presentations by members of the TranslAtWar team, the conference benefited from contributions by colleagues from the Universities of Ljubljana and Madrid, as well as Sorbonne University, generating particularly rich scientific exchanges.
Overall, these three days offered a valuable space for collective reflection on translation practices in times of war, while strengthening scholarly dialogue within and beyond the TranslAtWar project.
Colloque international ERC TranslAtWar – Traduction littéraire, canons et idéologies : Anthologies et formes anthologiques en Europe durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939-45)

Il portera sur les anthologies de littérature en traduction réalisées en Europe durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en interrogeant leurs enjeux esthétiques, idéologiques et mémoriels.
L’événement réunira des chercheuses et chercheurs européens spécialistes de littérature comparée, de traduction littéraire et d’histoire culturelle pour une réflexion collective sur les pratiques anthologiques en contexte de conflit.

L’équipe TranslAtWar s’est réunie les 24 et 25 octobre derniers dans le Museum de l’ancienne Université d’Athènes pour 2 jours de séminaire passionnants sur les portraits de traducteurs durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Les 4 doctorantes du programme ont notamment présenté le futur compte Instagram de l’ERC TranslAtWar qui sera mis en ligne très prochainement. Le prochain rendez-vous TranslAtWar est par ailleurs déjà annoncé et traitera d’un sujet inédit : les anthologies de textes littéraires en traduction durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Il se déroulera à Paris les 13 et 14 novembre 2025 et sera le premier évènement TranslAtWar ouvert ! Plus d’informations à venir d’ici la fin de l’année …
The TranslAtWar team met on October, 24th and 25th in the museum of Athens’ Old University for a 2-day fascinating seminar about the translators’ portraits during WW2. The 4 PhD students of the program also introduced the future Instagram account of the ERC TranslAtWar which will be online very soon. The next TranslAtWar meeting has already been announced and will deal with an original subject: the anthologies of literary texts in translation during WW2. It will take place in Paris on November, 13th and 14th 2025 and will be the first TranslAtWar event open to external participations! More information to come by the end of the year...
